Types of permissions and what they allow
Exercode's service for organizations offers four types of permissions. In the help guides, organization administrators are called "implementation staff," group administrators are called "instructors," members of a material repository are called "material authors," and general members are called "students" (glossary).
Organization administrators
- This permission is intended for those who oversee an entire school or faculty.
- They can manage organizations and groups, invite members, add courses, and so on.
Group administrators
- This permission is intended for class teachers and instructors in charge.
- They can manage members of the groups they are responsible for, add courses, and configure operational settings.
Members of a material repository
- This permission is intended for those who create and maintain teaching materials.
- The permission is granted per material repository and applies only to courses imported from that repository.
How to become a member
You are treated as a member of a material repository if any of the following applies.
- On the material repositories screen, you were the first user to add that material repository to Exercode using
Add from my GitHub or Sync with my GitHub (adding requires write permission to that repository on GitHub; syncing an already-added material repository does not make you a member)
- If the material repository is registered to an organization, an organization administrator of that organization
- If the material repository is registered to an organization, a user whom an organization administrator of that organization added as a member
- A user registered as a member of the material repository by the service operator
What you can do
For courses imported from a material repository, you can:
- Open course editing and schedule settings from the
Menu for repository administrators on the course screen
- Edit materials (including adding and editing problems)
- Open and review materials outside the submission period with
Start (instructor mode)
- On a problem screen for a problem that has a leaderboard, press
View leaderboard to see the submitted code and grades of all students listed on it
- Run real-time surveys (the operation screen shows the names and email addresses of connected participants, along with aggregated responses)
- Broadcast live lectures (only if you belong to some organization; broadcasts reach only students in the same organization)
What you cannot do
Being a member of a material repository alone does not let you check students' learning status on the following screens.
To use these screens, you must be an organization administrator of an organization to which the course is added (including when it is added to a group within that organization), or a group administrator of a group to which the course is added. Even an organization administrator is treated the same as a material repository member if the course is not added to their organization or to any group within it, and the material repository is merely registered to the organization.
You also cannot manage members of organizations or groups, or add courses to organizations or groups.
Whether you can view students' submissions on the submission list and submission details depends not on your relationship to the course or material repository, but on your relationship to the person who submitted. In addition to your own submissions, you can view submissions from members of organizations or groups that you administer. However, on a problem's Leaderboard, instructors of the course (including material repository members) can view the submitted code and grades of all students listed on it.
General members (students)
- These are users who belong to organizations or groups and do not hold administrative permissions. They are intended for students taking classes.
- They can open the materials of courses added to the organizations or groups they belong to, submit to problems, and use AI chat and hints.
- They cannot view other members' submissions or learning status.

- ※1 You can add only courses created in that organization and courses imported from material repositories registered to that organization.
- ※2 Available when the course is added to your organization (including groups within it) or to a group.
- ※3 Applies only to courses imported from a material repository.
- ※4 Available if you belong to some organization (including groups within it). Broadcasts reach only students who belong to the same organization.
- ※5 Applies only to material repositories registered to an organization. Members you add can, for courses imported from that material repository, view all submissions listed on the leaderboard and the names and email addresses of real-time survey participants (for public courses, this includes students outside the organization).
Notes
- Organization administrators handle courses added to their organization and courses within the scope they manage.
- Group administrators work mainly with courses and members linked to the groups they manage.
- When you are involved with a course in more than one capacity, you are treated according to the higher-ranking permission in this order: organization administrator, group administrator, material repository member.
- When no member of a group holds administrative permission, only an organization administrator can add the first group administrator to that group. Once set, that group administrator can grant administrative permission to other instructors.
